Dec 28 is my special day. I was supposed to be a Christmas baby, like a Christmas Star, but I came late. (maybe a sign of things to come, lol)
My husband’s grandmother has the same birthday. She is going to be 90 tomorrow. My MIL decided a LOOOOOONG time ago (before I was around) that it was very selfish of a person to be born at Christmas time, so she would celebrate her mom's "half birthday" on June 28 each year. (let's not discuss the fact that she gave birth to 2 sons in December)
When she met me, she thought that I might like the "half birthday thing too." I will admit that I had been toying with the idea when I was a kid, but Never for June 28... that is MY dad's b-day. Soooo, I can't do my day on his day. We need our own. Somehow our family has managed to stretch our birthdays into a week (or longer) celebration. And believe me, if anyone should get to stretch out their b-days, it should be the ones who get forgotten or "blended" b-days. (all you Christmas girls out here know what I mean)
So, normally Grandma and I don't do our birthdays together. We did 10 years ago, and let me tell you... it was memorable, but not something I would EVER want to spend a birthday, or any day doing. We got to spend MY 25th b-day visiting her hubby at a nursing home. (let's just say that a nursing home is probably my LEAST favorite place in the world to be... I would rank it right above prison.) I don't think I will forget that day.
OK, fast forward to Christmas Day. MIL announced at Christmas dinner that EVERYONE was coming out for my birthday! She meant EVERYONE in her family. Her brothers and their families, her sons and their families, her mom...So I quiz her... is this MY birthday or Grandmas? "Well it is both!" she says. I am a little cautious. I say that since Grandma is turning 90, I will put MY day on hold and do my birthday another day so I don't take anything away from Grandma. (not to mention that I may have other plans for my birthday that may not include spending the day with people I don't know that well) "Oh no," she says, "it is going to be a BIG double birthday party!" "So, am I getting presents from your family too?" "I will only accept if I am getting presents." I said. (I know, I was being a brat, but I was just checking to see if this REALLY was supposed to be a double party, or if she just threw me in there because it is also my birthday and I am going to be there, and she didn't want me sitting there sad on my bday.) She actually said something like she would call and let everyone know. (if it really was a double party, they should already know, right?)
So, I am going to invite my own family. (my brother and his wife and kids) And I have to get the cake from Costco. (because I demanded a cake with the kind of frosting that I like) Hey, it IS my birthday.
I am still going to stretch my birthday out. I was actually planning on going to Six Flags and get one last use out of our season passes before they expire. Oh well.
I am embracing the day, by putting "Happy 125th Birthday" on the cake. Cause, yes, she is 90, but how often do you get to see that 125 on a cake? And it is my day too. And it is supposed to be a "double party."
I am also making little 4x6 cards for everyone to write love notes and sweet thoughts of Grandma on, and I will take pics of everyone and make her a 9x9 album of the day.
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest! I am off to get my birthday pedicure now
